Brian McLane

Brian Mclane is the Senior Director for Market Intelligence, Market Analytics and Digital Products at Priority Health. Brian’s teams provide the organization with corporate and line of business intelligence and measurement. His teams also lead efforts related to Priority Health’s member portals and transparency tools. In his work, Brian’s goal is to simplify the complex world of health care through the use of data and analytics to engage members in their health care decisions.

Steve Selinsky

VP of Product, Marketing, and COmmunity Outreach

As the vice president of product, marketing and community outreach, Steve Selinsky is responsible for coordinating all sales and enrollment activities for HAP’s individual and Medicare customers, as well as the development of HAP’s government and commercial products. He is also responsible for all of HAP’s marketing and communications activities, as well as the company’s community engagement, which includes sponsorships and community partnerships in the geographic areas in which HAP does business.

Steve joined HAP in 2013, having held sales leadership positions at several major health insurers throughout his 25-year career. He served as the president of the National Association of Health Underwriters from 2010 to 2011 and was a board member and chair for NAHU’s education foundation. In 2017, Steve received the Harold R. Gordon Memorial Award from NAHU. The award is NAHU’s highest honor and recognizes him as the Health Insurance Person of the Year. Steve is a board member and past president of the Metro Detroit Association of Health Underwriters, as well as a board member and chair of the Health Underwriters Political Action Committee (HUPAC). He also serves on the board of the Hannan Center, which is dedicated to serving the senior population, as well as RISE, an association that provides quality resources for health care professionals. He previously served on the boards of Oakland Literacy Council and the Village School for Autistic Children..

Steve holds a bachelor's degree from Albion College in Albion, Mich. He is also a graduate of Leadership Oakland and Leadership Detroit.

Angel Ems-McLaren

As director of product development and management, Angel Ems-McLaren is responsible for the creation, implementation and management of HAP’s commercial products including Large Group, ASO, Small Group and Individual QHP product lines. An experienced health plan leader, Angel has led innovative initiatives and teams across multiple industries including IT, healthcare, and health plan. With an extensive focus on member/patient experience at past corporations.

Angel serves as the Public Awareness chair for Soroptimist International Monroe Chapter. She holds a master’s degree from Walsh College in Troy, Michigan.

Billy Justice

Billy Justice currently serves as the Marketing and Sales Director with Vantage Health Plan, a Louisiana Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), with corporate headquarters in Monroe, LA.  Billy has been a lead person and the face of Vantage for almost 25 years directing the marketing and sales. In these roles, he manages over 20 in-house Marketing and Member Service personnel along with a growing network of over 1200 independent producers.  Billy wrote the very first fully-insured policy for Vantage in June of 1996.  Billy has been instrumental in the development of many products to include HMO plans, Deductible Plans, Individual plans, High deductible plans, as well as Medicare Advantage Plans for Vantage Health Plan.

Billy is also actively involved with the Louisiana Associations of Health Plans, and has served on the board of directors with the Louisiana Association of Health Underwriters.

Betsy Plunkett, MA, PMP

Betsy Plunkett joined the initial team at Maryland Health Benefit Exchange in March 2013, and participated in building the agency’s structure and preparing for the first open enrollment. Her background in newspapers, hospitals, and ad agencies specializing in health care led her to the Maryland Insurance Administration, where she began state service. In her current role as director, marketing & web strategies, Betsy integrates the agency’s websites with marketing initiatives to further our mission.

Before that, Kent had multiple successes with AIM Healthcare (now a part of Optum, a United Health Group, Inc. company), rising to National Director as it expanded into new markets. Melissa Smith brings over 25 years of experience in Star Ratings, strategy, sales, and marketing for health plans, providers, pharmacy benefit managers, and industry vendors. As the Executive Vice President of Consulting and Professional Services, Melissa draws on her extensive industry experience to help health plans become better, faster, and stronger. Her team of consultants understand the challenges clients face day-to-day because they have worked within health plans prior to consulting. Fueled by this valuable perspective, Melissa develops strategic and tactical solutions that meet client needs and improve performance on clinical, medication, patient survey, and administrative quality measures.

Melissa is a well-known thought leader and healthcare strategist with proven success developing enterprise-wide solutions to improve Star Ratings, quality performance, health outcomes, and the member experience. She has helped dozens of clients in a consulting capacity improve performance within HEDIS®, Star Ratings and other quality programs and helps clients evaluate market dynamics and opportunities, optimize distribution channels, and support our clients’ strategic planning needs.

Prior to entering the consulting industry, Melissa served in a leadership capacity at Cigna-HealthSpring where she led Star Ratings efforts for approximately 25 Medicare Advantage contracts. Before working in Medicare Advantage and quality ratings systems, Melissa was an Associate Director at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Melissa received her degree from Purdue University and began her career at KPMG, LLP.

Melissa’s unique background of business process, regulatory compliance, and healthcare quality provides a unique combination of healthcare strategy, quality performance, revenue optimization, and other vital elements required for strong Star Ratings.

Bridget Hollingsworth Stafford

As marketing and community outreach director, Bridget Hollingsworth Stafford is responsible for creating and managing strategies for HAP’s corporate social responsibility, charitable giving and community outreach activities. Bridget oversees outreach efforts aimed at the Medicaid population in metro Detroit and greater Flint, along with employee volunteer opportunities and promotional activities to support membership growth and retention for HAP.

Bridget has over 30 years of experience in the promotional and insurance industries. In her previous role as regional director of New Business Sales and Account Management, she led initiatives for membership growth and retention for HAP’s commercial groups and managed HAP’s relationship with large and small employer groups in the mid-Michigan region.

Bridget received the YWCA of Greater Flint award in 2006 and the Women in Power award in 2017. She currently serves as a community mentor with the Greater Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce and is volunteer coordinator for the golf outing committee for Back to the Bricks, Inc. She also serves on the Flint Leadership team for the American Cancer Society Community Equity Projects, addressing financial toxicity for cancer patients in Flint and the Crim Fitness Foundation Race Committee in support of the annual HAP Crim Festival of Races in Flint, Mich. Bridget was previously on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County and United Way of Saginaw County.

She holds an associate degree from Schoolcraft College and earned a radio and TV broadcasting certificate from Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts. Bridget lives in Flushing, Mich. with her husband Mike, and their cats, Tux and Slater.

Michael Marchand, CHP

Michael Marchand is the Chief Marketing Officer for the Washington Health Benefit Exchange. Michael has over two decades of experience successfully delivering on policy, advocacy, communications and user experience goals. In this role, he is responsible for the Exchange’s strategic commitment to branding, marketing, advertising, public relations, outreach, Tribal relations and the user experience.

Michael has been with the Exchange prior to its launch in 2013, overseeing the creation, development and execution of consumer campaigns that have successfully branded the Exchange as a trusted marketplace and resource. Through his leadership, Exchange marketing campaigns have received numerous honors including multiple gold American Advertising Awards, for both best broadcast spot and best TV campaign, and the Public Relation Society of America’s coveted Silver Anvil Award for top consumer product marketing campaign in health care category.

Michael has been at the forefront of national health reform efforts, including work on the state’s successful Medicaid Electronic Health Records Incentive Program, that provided more than $200 million in federal payments to eligible professionals and hospitals. Prior to working with the state, Michael served as a director with both Microsoft’s Health Solutions Group and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where he earned the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service for advocacy and outreach during the launch of Medicare Part D. He also served as a deputy for Gov. Gary Locke of Washington providing guidance on numerous issues including healthcare.

Michael Gerrish

Mike Gerrish joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas in September 2020, after spending the previous 11 years with Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in Iowa, most recently as vice president of marketing. At BCBSKS, Gerrish has executive responsibility over a newly created division which includes marketing communications, corporate communications, competitive intelligence and market research, e-commerce and customer experience.

Mike has a passion for listening and understanding the consumer in order to create positive customer experiences. He is driven by data, measuring customer loyalty and messaging impact to establish strong business cases to move ideas forward. He is excited to use these talents to grow and improve customer experience at BCBSKS. “Branding and experience have never been more important for a company,” said Mike Gerrish, vice president, chief marketing and experience officer. “The brand is our promise and the experience is how we deliver on that promise. Prior to joining Wellmark, Mike led global retail communications at Payless ShoeSource in Topeka and held several marketing and communication roles at Discover Financial Services and Discover Network.

Steven Carleton

Steven Carleton is Vice President of Customer Experience for Premera Blue Cross. Much of his career can be summed up as “making things work better.” He has been a leader in nearly every business function across a variety of industries. Prior to joining Premera in April 2019, Steven spent 15+ years in Silicon Valley building and leading teams at eBay, Apple, Genentech, and Sun Microsystems.

Carleton’s passion for creating meaningful and memorable experiences is equaled by his commitment to letting the data guide decision making. Finding the right story in a sea of information while honoring the human side of business have been key differentiators in his career. Striking this balance has allowed him to bridge the gap between technologists, sales, marketing, finance, and product teams to best serve customers.

Carleton is a graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy and Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Following his first shipboard assignment in Seattle, he spent the remainder of his Coast Guard career as a rescue helicopter pilot. He dreams of mastering the seaplane so he and his wife can explore the inside passage of Vancouver Island.

Ron Cornell

Ron Cornell serves as the Director of Product Innovation for First Choice Health in Seattle, a position he has held since July 2018. With more than 20 years of experience leading initiatives in product research, design, testing and development for various healthcare markets, Ron has spent much of his career influencing, engaging and working directly with C-suite customers from government, managed care, pharmaceutical and technology sectors.

Ron began his career working in advertising in Chicago in the production division for Jack Levy Associates. Ron moved to New York City in 2001 to produce large-scale educational forums, tradeshows and conferences for healthcare markets. He has held leadership positions at the International Quality & Productivity Center, World Research Group and was the Managing Director of the Employer Division for World Health Care Congress. He previously served as a strategy and marketing consultant for numerous healthcare startups in New York City and Seattle, before transitioning to Premera Blue Cross in marketing, innovation, and strategic development roles.

Ron graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL with a BS in Communications Studies and Radio, TV & Film and received his MBA specializing in Technology Management from the University of Washington Foster School of Business

Neal Sofian

Neal is recognized nationally for almost 40 years of innovation in population-based and corporate health management/engagement, and organizational change.

During his career, Neal commercialized the first and now largest telephonic coaching program in the United States, Free & Clear (now called Quit for Life) and many of the early health related social networking platforms including the American Cancer Society's Cancer Survivors Network.

He is a noted author and speaker and continues to be acknowledged as one of the true innovators in the world of health behavior change. Neal is currently the CEO of tuzag, Inc. a software company that has built a tailored content service and engagement platform for driving exponentially greater consumer behavior change.

Previously Neal was the Director of Member Engagement at Premera Blue Cross where he is responsible for development strategies to engage the 2.2 million members of Premera in reaching their optimal health. He is focused on creating and implementing a model focused on personalized tailored messaging, rewards, and choice architecture based on creating segments of one.

Prior to Premera, Neal was the Director of Behavioral Interventions for Resolution Health after its acquisition of the NewSof Group of which Neal was the co-founder and CEO. The NewSof Group was a consulting and new media development company focused on scalable health change, learning, coaching, sharing, and support. He was also a co-founder of Healthcare onsite, a worksite based primary care service.

During his tenure at Group Health Cooperative, Neal served as Director of Innovation, Manager of Worksite and Community Programs, and General Manager of Health At Work, the Northwest's first worksite health promotion company in 1983. He designed health and productivity management services for regional and national employers incorporating health promotion, disease management, onsite primary care, and time loss management strategies.

He is a well-known author and speaker in the field of health management, humor and health, and the role of personalization and social networking. Neal holds a master's degree in public health from the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He is also a working potter/sculpture and has done stand-up comedy in a vaudeville show.
